About the Centre for Molecular Medicine
Introduction
Opened in 1996, the Molecular Medicine Centre building provides a first class research and training environment in clinically relevant, molecular biology and genetics research for around 150 staff. In the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise, the research outputs were returned in the Clinical and Hospital based subjects Unit of assessment and rated 5*. Research funding held by senior investigators exceeded £60million in 2003.
The Centre for Molecular Medicine comprises 4 University Academic Research Sections and 1 NHS Service Section.
- Medical Genetics Section (Professor David Porteous).
- Rheumatic Diseases Unit (Professor Stuart Ralston).
- The Gastrointestinal Unit (Professor Satsangi).
- SE Scotland NHS Clinical and Molecular Genetics Service (Dr Mary Porteous and Dr Jon Warner) (Telephone enquiries: (44) 131 651 1012)
The Molecular Medicine Centre building is linked physically to the MRC Human Genetics Unit (Director: Professor Nick Hastie), which is one of the largest MRC Units in the UK with over 220 staff. Jointly, this constitutes one of the largest aggregates of human molecular genetics research capacity in the UK. In a partnership between the MRC and the University of Edinburgh, the Centre for Molecular Medicine together with the Edinburgh Cancer Research Centre are working with the MRC Human Genetics Unit to establish an Institute of Genetics and Molecular Medicine.
Also on the Western General Campus is Edinburgh Cancer Research Centre , the Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences and the Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility
The Centre for Molecular Medicine holds several major Programme Grants awarded by the Medical Research Council, the Wellcome Trust, the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, the British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research UK, plus many other awards from public sector, charitable and industrial collaborative research funding, to a value in excess of £61 million.
