PROFESSOR J SATSANGI DPhil FRCP FRCPE FMed Sci FRSEBackgroundJack Satsangi was appointed in September 2000 as Professor of Gastroenterology and Consultant Physician, Western General Hospital, University of Edinburgh, having previously trained at St Thomas' Hospital, London (1981-7), and in Oxford (1988-2000). His clinical and laboratory research interests centre on inflammatory bowel diseases - both in Oxford and in Edinburgh, he has been responsible for a series of important publications into disease pathogenesis, management and novel therapeutic approaches. The Edinburgh team has provided important insights into genetic susceptibility, and Professor Satsangi has an international reputation in this area, whilst being a PI in national and international IBD genetics consortia. Professor Jack Satsangi chaired the 2005 Montreal working party which has successfully re-classified inflammatory bowel disease. Specific current interests include childhood-onset disease, the safety of biological therapies, post-operative prevention in Crohn's disease, mortality in severe colitis, and stem cell therapy in Crohn's disease. He has authored over 170 peer-reviewed publications, and was co-author of the influential text-book Inflammatory Bowel Diseases. Professor Jack Satsangi is the out-going secretary of the IBD Section of the BSG, and was heavily involved in the recent revision of guidelines for IBD management in the UK. He has won several prestigious awards, lectured throughout the world, and was recently elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, 2009. In 2010, Jack was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in recognition of his outstanding work in gastrointestinal disease and inflammatory bowel disease. | ||
